ear piercing FAQs

  • Children must be at least 4 months old for ear piercing at Warm Heart Pediatrics.

In terms of “ideal” age, there is no single right answer to this question! For some families, ear piercing is a tradition in infancy. Others prefer to wait until their children are older.

One consideration: the toddler years can be more challenging when it comes to the piercing itself, maintenance and aftercare, although this depends a great deal on your child’s temperament. From our experience, piercing before 12 months or after 6years are often easier on patients and parents.

If you’re not sure, feel free to reach out and we can help determine if your child is ready!

  • You can choose between either silver or pink medical-grade plastic studs (we use these because they are less likely to cause irritation, infection, or allergy).

Warm Heart Pediatrics uses the Blomdahl piercing system, which makes allows us to pierce quickly and accurately with as little discomfort as possible.

  • I do not recommend changing the studs out for a minimum of 8-12 weeks.

If the earring falls out, please replace with any earring you have available and contact me for a replacement (the piercing studs are slightly thicker than regular earrings, so they are best for the early phase of healing).

After this period, you can switch out for a regular stud earring. I do not recommend dangly earrings in toddlers and young children because of the risk of injury.

  • Clean your piercings twice a day for at least 6 weeks or until piercings are healed. We recommend using sterile saline wipes (not alcohol!)

We use the Blomdahl aftercare wipes (here is an instructional video). We will provide you with detailed instructions and sterile saline wipes for the first 3 weeks.

Taking care of your newly pierced ears is critical to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of infections or complications.

  • As with any procedure that involves trauma to the skin, there is some risk of infection, bleeding, scarring and keloid formation. We make sure everything is sterile and as long as you cleanse appropriately, this shouldn’t be an issue.

If there is any soreness, redness, or pus at the site of piercing, see your doctor within 24 hours.

In rare cases, the earring may need to be removed, and oral antibiotics are prescribed. After 6 to 12 months, the ear can be re-pierced.

Very rarely, it is also possible for the stud or earring to be “swallowed up" by the earlobe which can result in pain/discomfort/infection. We intentionally choose studs with larger pieces to minimize the risk of this.

It is also important to be aware that the risk of developing an allergy to specific metals found in earrings is highest in the first year after the piercing. Nickel is a common allergen. To minimize this risk, choose hypoallergenic earrings for at least the first year after piercing.
